{"id":325,"date":"2014-06-10T12:43:02","date_gmt":"2014-06-10T12:43:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shirishranjit.com\/blog1\/?page_id=325"},"modified":"2014-08-05T15:19:37","modified_gmt":"2014-08-05T15:19:37","slug":"updating-nvidia-graphics-driver-in-linux-ubuntu-14-04","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/shirishranjit.com\/blog1\/technical-posts\/linux-tidbits\/updating-nvidia-graphics-driver-in-linux-ubuntu-14-04","title":{"rendered":"Updating NVIDIA Graphics Driver in Linux (Ubuntu 14.04)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Updating NVIDIA Graphics Driver in Linux (Ubuntu 14.04)<\/p>\n<p>If you have been playing with NVIDIA graphics installs then deactivate the driver from the Additional Drivers window and then reactivate to reinstall.<\/p>\n<p>You can also remove all references to nvidia kernels install via<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: #707070;\">\n<pre><code>sudo apt-get remove nvidia*\r\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"color: #333333;\"><code style=\"color: #222222;\">sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-*\r\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">Then installing\u00a0<code style=\"color: #222222;\">nvidia-current<\/code>:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"color: #333333;\"><code style=\"color: #222222;\">sudo apt-get install nvdia-current<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Then reinstall the driver from Additional Drivers window.<\/p>\n<p>Install nvidia-331. I did it through Synaptic Package Manager.<\/p>\n<pre> <code>sudo apt-get install nvidia-331<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally run the Nvidia routine to generate a new xorg.conf<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: #707070;\">\n<pre><code>gksudo nvidia-settings<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To stop your display manager or the X server, you can type in the console this code:<\/p>\n<pre><code style=\"color: #222222;\">   sudo stop lightdm   or\r\n\r\n   sudo lightdm stop\r\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>If you are not using\u00a0<strong>lightdm<\/strong>\u00a0as your default display manager (DM), replace lightdm with your default display manager, which can be either\u00a0<strong>kdm<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>gdm<\/strong>\u00a0or whatever your display manager is.<\/p>\n<p>You should get a message in the terminal console saying &#8211;&gt; lightdm stopped\/waiting<\/p>\n<p>And now you can finally install the nvidia driver using a code similar to this one:<\/p>\n<pre><code style=\"color: #222222;\">  sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64.....run    (for Ubuntu 64bit)  \r\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>or<\/p>\n<pre><code style=\"color: #222222;\">  sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86.....run    (for Ubuntu 32bit)\r\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t type the exact name of the driver, you&#8217;ll get this message:\u00a0<strong>NVIDIA-Linux&#8230; could not be found<\/strong>\u00a0and you should type again the code for installing the driver.<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia installer automatically installs the driver, and at the end it will ask you whether you want to save your new X configuration. Press Yes. After reboot and getting to your desktop and changing your NVIDIA settings as you please you should open a terminal window and type in this code:<\/p>\n<pre><code style=\"color: #222222;\">  sudo nvidia-xconfig\r\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<pre class=\"bbcode_code\" style=\"color: #000000;\">sudo apt-get install nvidia-settings<\/pre>\n<p>to save your new nvidia configuration in \/etc\/X11\/xorg.conf.<\/p>\n<p>It can happen that after reboot your system shows a black screen or enters the low graphics mode. To fix this you should exit again to the console terminal, login with your username and password, and use the code provided above\u00a0<strong>sudo nvidia-xconfig<\/strong>\u00a0and also make use of the following tutorial.
